Book Marks –
HEG provided at least 12 bookmarks.  There may have been some that seminar attendees provided themselves.  Once
I here a final count of how many were collected I’ll share the total count. Again, thanks to everyone who stitched one for
this worthy project.
Heart and Hand Award Gold Thread Award Nomination
As most of you know by know HEG nominated Annette Money as our “Unsung Hero”.  Although she wasn’t selected as
the one among the 10 nominations received, I do know she is a #1 Winner in our eyes.  I’ve included the original
nomination letter written by Margy Clark.  Do you think we can appeal?

I first met Annette Money in 1996 in Victoria Texas where she was judging a quilt and needlework show.  I was her
scribe.  I had been quilting but knew nothing about EGA or HEG.  She was so kind, encouraging and positive with her
critiques.  I knew at once that she was special.  Not long after the exhibit I received in the mail a handmade angel doll as
a thank you for assisting her.  I keep that angel in my bedroom hanging on a wardrobe pull.  Everyday I see her and that
little doll has Annette’s face.

In 1997 when I moved to Houston and joined HEG, one of the first meetings was making favors for the SCR Seminar we
were hosting the next year.  Annette had designed all of the favors, arranged work days, and taught us how to make
tassels and zippered bags.  In 2008 HEG again hosted the SCR Seminar and Annette again volunteered to be Favors
Chair.  She constructed a fully stocked etui, scheduled workdays, assigned jobs, and sweetly cracked the whip while we
made 275 etuis and accessories.

Annette is one of those people who quietly contributes to HEG.  For years, she has made ditty bags (using her own
materials) for our members to fill with necessities for the Women’s Shelter.  When I needed help turning a bandanna into
a drawstring bag for Boot Camp favors, she readily taught me her method and finished half of them.  Last year, she
volunteered to be the Chair of CSI (Creative Stitching Interests): Quilts and Beads.  She took over when attendance was
low and set up a schedule of programs and projects.  This year the group disbanded despite Annette’s organized efforts
to keep the group afloat.

Annette marches to a different drummer than most of us.  She is a successful Art Doll maker and receives ribbons and
awards every time she exhibits.  We become little girls again whenever Annette brings a new doll to Show and Tell.  Not
only is the doll intricately made, but the doll always has a story to tell us.

I am sure there are many members who qualify for the Heart and Hand Award, but in my opinion there is no one more
deserving than Annette Money.  Her heart is evident at every meeting as she shares her knowledge, her art, and her
cheerfulness.  She is one of the first to greet a new member or hug a returning member.  Despite having fibromyalgia,
her hand is always there to teach, create and pat everyone on the back but herself.  I am honored to call Annette my
friend.

Margy is not alone in feeling “honored to call Annette my friend” we all feel this way.  Thank you Annette.
Opportunity Knocks Baskets –
Our Opportunity Knock$ Ba$ket$ Rocked!!  It was by far the best around!  We really did an outstanding job.  Thank you
to everyone who had a hand and/or needle in it regardless of how big or small.  We don’t have the results of how much
we made, but I do know that we made the most.  Opportunity Knocks baskets overall brought in more than $3,000.
Thank you Candy for chairing the project for us.

I’m still accepting ideas for our Stock Pile of Ideas (SPI) so we can always be ahead of the game for future Opportunity
Knocks Baskets.  There is a prize for the person who submits the most ideas before 31 October.  (Yes, the word
“charm” is involved.)  I am interested in hearing from anyone who can share what we did for previous years too.  Sorry,
no prize for this one.  We will select the next Great Idea for our SCR 2010 Opportunity Knocks Basket at the next board
meeting.  If someone would like to chair the next Opportunity Knocks Basket, I’d love to hear from you.
SCR HISTORY:
Pat Dugan, SCR Historian, shared that only eight chapters have submitted information.  I know that this request has
been going on for some time, as I can recall at least SCR 2008 and 2009 Seminars there were requests made to the
masses.  Therefore, if you have any history, stories or information on HEG and/or SCR that you would like to share
please contact Pat at: askpathow@sbcglobal.net, you can write her at: PO BOX 415, Norphlet, AR 71759; she will even
take verbal stories at 866.862.2239 (toll free).  Of course the latter is harder to send photos . . . .  She is hopeful to
have a proof of the history book at the Feb 2010 SCR mid-year meeting.  They are also still looking for a title for the
book as well.  I am sure that many of you have something you could or should share with her.  Please don’t let HEG be
one of the chapters that aren’t featured.  Thank you.
National Seminar
T
he National Seminar will be held every five (5) years in Louisville rather than every 10 years.  Therefore, the next
time in Kentucky will be 2013 which will move the next one in our region to 2014.  The National Exhibit is in Rogers,
Arkansas and will be there until 9 August.  Barbi McPhee said to let her know if you are planning to attend and the
members of Bella Vista Chapter will help assist you with coordinating your visit, e.g. suggesting accommodations,
places to eat, etc.
General SCR notes:
Correspondence Courses offered by SCR, you may sign up for more than one.  However, please provide a separate
check for each.  This way if the class doesn’t receive a minimum of ten students your check can easily be returned to
you for that particular class.  The courses offered are: Hummingbird & Honeysuckle p30, $35; More Options in
Hardanger p26, $34; Morning Glories p26, $36; Angelina: Drawn Italian Thread, p23 $35; Cleopartra’s Cat p21, $45
and Japanese Tamari Basics for Beginners p32, $35.  Deadline to sign up is 1 August 2009.  If you are interested in a
class contact the SCR Education Coordinator, Barbara Hering.

Reminder regarding the
Education Grant for $450; we only need to complete the region’s Request for Reimbursement
form include receipts/backup documentation, and submit it before 31 December 2009..

There were about 7 ideas for a
SCR banner.  All attending the seminar had the opportunity to vote for their choice.  At
the end of the seminar 2 of them tied.  The designers agreed to work on a commingled project.  We look forward to
seeing it in the near future.

The IRS is in the process of changing Form 990, Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax.  Although they have
not finalized it as of yet, the word on the street is that we will now be expected to provide a log of our “service hours” for
EGA.  Therefore, each meeting there will be a
Volunteer Time Log Sheet on the table where we sign in.  Please include
time such as stitching the Habitat for Humanity Samplers and Kissing Pillows, attending functions such as the
presentation of the habitat samplers, etc.  At this time we don’t have clear directions, so it is better to try to log them in
now rather than remember next year how much time we spent this year.  Time stitching the items for Opportunity Knocks
baskets and ribbons for the Exhibit does not count.  More information will be shared when it is known.

Comments, questions, concerns, suggestions, please let me know.

SCR Seminar 2009 – Arlington, Texas – We had 19 attendees from HEG this year.  Many of us learned ways to
complete our finished stitch work and many worked on their MAGIC commitment and other unfinished projects.
Everyone should have received the brochure for the Stitching Safari Seminar 2010 in Dallas, see color photos and get
more details from: http://dntg.org/Seminar2010.html.  Just think in 2010 Cathy Trostmann and Mary Leach will be
attending their 30th SCR Seminar!  Now that’s something to write about.
