| BOOK REVIEW TITLE: TEACH A CHILD AND SEE THE FUTURE AUTHOR: BARBARA ALEXANDER HERRING HEG # 2019 Those of you who attended the program on teaching needlework to children will appreciate this book. While there are no pretty pictures, this book is chock full of step by step ways to approach children of all ages (and adults too for that matter) using embroidery as an art form. Starting with the study of textiles and their origins this book goes on to show the teacher how to assist the class in research, planning and designs for different projects. Designs can be hand wrought or can be modernized with computer generation. Either way the stitches will still be done by hand. The best ages to start young children is in grades 1- 4 as they tend not to be so critical of the outcome of their work and can really enjoy the creative process to its fullest extent. This is also a good time in which to establish creative thinking skills and allows the student to become comfortable with the creative process. It also helps build skills one can take into adulthood. This book is written by a true educator; as it goes on to apply some of the great educational theories like Blooms Taxonomy to needlework. It also discusses other learning theories dear to my heart and to those of us with education degrees such as Betts, Renzulli, Taylor and the Purdue model. Ideas for lesson plans are also included which helps to make putting a program together relatively simple. Details are included as to how to relate embroidery to different academic subjects along with ideas for an in service program on how to instruct classroom teachers. Project ideas with age appropriate levels are also discussed. One does not have to wrack one’s brains out when having to give a program to children or unskilled adults using the methods discussed herein. All in all this entire book is full of untold ideas and methods about how to teach both children and adults. It should prove itself an invaluable asset to those who choose to do so; and even greater value is that it can be reproduced as needed by any member of the Embroiders’ Guild of America.
